Choosing the Right Wood Fired Hot Tub for Your Outdoor Space

When considering a wood fired hot tub, it's important to understand the different options available. There are multiple options to choose from, offering different capacities and design approaches to suit your space and preferences. Some options are ideal for couples, while others are better suited for families or groups, with flexible features to match your needs.

Build quality plays a crucial role in ensuring your wood fired hot tub is durable and long-lasting. Careful craftsmanship contributes to the overall reliability and performance of the hot tub. Proper insulation is also essential, as it helps retain warmth and improve energy efficiency, making your hot tub more cost-effective to run.

A range of optional additions is available for wood fired hot tubs, including insulated covers, steps, and LED lighting. These additions enhance comfort and enjoyment, allowing you to personalize your hot tub experience.

Wooden hot tubs stand out from other types due to their timeless aesthetic and traditional character. They provide an authentic relaxation experience and remain a popular choice for outdoor living.

From Scandinavian classics to modern all-in-one solutions

In Scandinavian countries, saunas and hot tubs have long been an essential part of the wellness tradition. The wood-fired hot tub, in particular, has retained its classic form, remaining free from many of the modern enhancements that have appeared over the past decade.

A traditional Scandinavian wood fired hot tub typically does not include features such as:

  • LED lighting or massage systems that require electricity
  • Water filtration or purification systems

Traditionally, the wood fired tub is filled before each use and emptied afterward. To fill the tub, simply add water—starting with warm water helps you enjoy your soak sooner. The process involves lighting a fire in the wood-burning heater, using dry firewood chopped into small pieces for efficient combustion. Logs, especially seasoned hardwood, are the traditional and most effective fuel source, delivering an authentic soaking experience. The fire gradually warms the water, and the overall process depends on factors such as water volume and the type of firewood used.

After use, it’s important to ensure the fire is completely out and the water has cooled before draining the tub. Always check that the water and drain valve are not frozen to prevent damage.

While the classic approach remains popular, modern technology now makes it possible to keep the water clean for one or even two months using minimal chemicals, a sand filter, and a UV lamp. This approach helps save water and reduce overall energy consumption.

For example, if you enjoy an evening soak in mild conditions and use a high-quality cover, the water often remains warm until the next morning—requiring only a small boost. This makes the experience both convenient and energy-efficient.

Centuries-Old Scandinavian Traditions

Rooted in centuries-old Scandinavian traditions, the Nordic bath originally took the form of a solid wooden barrel, used to relax after physical work and reconnect with nature. Heated by an open flame, it reached its ideal temperature thanks to either an internal or external wood-fired stove, depending on local practices and climatic conditions.

Traditional Nordic Know-How

The production of wood-fired Nordic baths, wooden spas and saunas is based on traditional Nordic craftsmanship passed down through generations. Careful selection of wood species, precise assembly and respect for artisanal methods ensure long-lasting durability, safety and comfort.

From Craftsmanship to Modern Comfort

While remaining true to their origins, Nordic baths have evolved to meet modern expectations. Today, they can incorporate contemporary features inspired by spa culture and panoramic sauna concepts, such as filtration systems, lighting, gentle bubbles or simplified controls — all without compromising the authenticity of the Nordic bathing ritual.

Wellness Equipment, Installation and Expertise

The distribution and installation of premium wellness equipment are part of this seamless balance between tradition and innovation. Each Nordic bath, spa or sauna is designed for durable outdoor installation and to deliver a complete wellness experience that remains faithful to the Nordic spirit.

What Does “Wood Fired Hot Tub” Really Mean?

  • Wooden bathing tub refers to a traditional Scandinavian hot tub, meaning a simple wooden tub without any electrical components.
A wooden barrel bath (also called a bathing barrel) is built entirely using classic construction methods and relies solely on wood and fire.

Newer products are often described as bathing tubs or hot tub barrels. However, these terms are not strictly defined and can vary depending on the manufacturer’s interpretation. For this reason, it’s always important to carefully check the specifications rather than rely on the name alone.

The term hot tub is generally used when the tub includes hydro or air massage systems. That said, when many people hear the phrase hot tub, they tend to imagine a fully electric spa, similar to a Jacuzzi.

Therefore, if you want to clearly communicate that the product is heated with wood and includes massage features, the most accurate descriptions are:
“Hot tub with a wood-burning stove” or “wood-fired hot tub.”

How to Choose the Right Wood Fired Hot Tub

When considering a wood fired hot tub, it's important to understand the different options available. There are multiple options to choose from, varying in capacity and design, so you can find the right fit for your space and preferences. Some options are ideal for couples, while others are better suited for families or groups, with flexible features to match your needs.

The first step is to decide on the size, shape, and position of the wood-fired heater.

Round hot tubs typically have an inner diameter of 180 cm, which fits 4 to 6 people, or 200 cm for 6 to 8 people. The corresponding outer diameters are 200 cm and 220 cm.

If you have limited space in your garden, it’s important to consider how many people will be using the hot tub at the same time—and whether saving water is a priority.

When you see a hot tub listed for 4–6 people, keep in mind that 4 adults will fit comfortably, while 6 is the maximum capacity, especially if some of the users are children.

Another important note: in many cases, a hot tub with an integrated wood-burning stove includes a raised section. This elevated area works perfectly as a seating spot for children or as a comfortable place to sit back and relax.

Modern square wood-fired hot tubs resemble traditional Jacuzzi models. Their main advantage is more legroom at the bottom. They also have a more modern look, but lose the cozy, circular seating arrangement. So it's worth thinking about what matters most to you—comfort, aesthetics, or space efficiency.

Massage Systems

All premium wood fired hot tubs come equipped with both air and hydro massage systems.

  • The number of air jets isn't the most crucial factor—whether there are 6 or 12, both can create a pleasant bubbling effect and provide gentle massages.
  • When it comes to hydro jets, your choice should depend on how intense you want the massage to be.
  • More jets—say, 24 instead of 16—typically mean the system includes one or two more powerful pumps, which ensures a stronger massage effect.

If you're looking for a truly luxurious experience, consider a wood-fired hot tub, as it offers a unique blend of ambiance, comfort, and energy efficiency.

With a wood-fired hot tub, you're all set for relaxing outdoor moments—no matter the season.

Wood-Fired Heater – Integrated or External?

In most cases, we recommend choosing a wood fired hot tub with a built-in wood-burning heater, it offers several key advantages:

  • Space-saving in your garden
  • No heat loss between the heater and the tub – especially important in winter
  • Many people find the design of a hot tub with a built-in heater more aesthetically pleasing

External Wood-Burning Stove

An external heater is often preferred by those who want more traditional seating space inside the tub, without the raised section that typically comes with an integrated heater.

Heating Time

Both integrated and external heaters warm up the hot tub quickly:

  • Summer: 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Winter: 3 to 3.5 hours

A Luxurious Experience

Combine a massage system with a wood-burning heater for the ultimate and luxurious wood-fired hot tub—melding soothing jets with the cozy wood charm of a traditional stove. Perfect for outdoor relaxation year-round.

Choosing the Right Wood Burner

When selecting a wood fired hot tub, it’s important to choose the appropriate wood burner for your setup. The size and efficiency of the burner directly affect how quickly and effectively the tub warms up. A well-designed wood burner ensures reliable performance and makes outdoor soaking enjoyable even during colder periods.

Installation and Conditions

External conditions can influence the overall warming process, and less favorable conditions may require a bit more time to reach optimal comfort. Proper installation also plays a key role. Installing your wood fired hot tub on a solid foundation, such as concrete or stone chippings, ensures stability and long-term use by preventing movement and keeping the tub level.

Efficient heating is ultimately achieved through thoughtful design and correct installation, allowing your wood fired hot tub to warm the water effectively while maintaining consistent comfort and minimizing energy use.

Extra-Long Durability

Both our fiberglass (GFK) and acrylic inserts are designed with long-term durability in mind.

The fiberglass inserts are coated with marine-grade gelcoat and reinforced with multiple layers of fiberglass.

These layers are applied both by machine and by hand to ensure attention to detail.

Whether you choose GFK or acrylic, the insert is extremely robust and built to last for years.

Easy Maintenance

Just use dish soap and a soft, non-abrasive cloth or sponge.

Exceptional Comfort

With smooth, precision-rounded edges, our GFK and acrylic inserts are ergonomically shaped to fit the natural contours of your body.

Unlike traditional wooden or plastic tubs, which can often feel uncomfortable, our inserts provide ergonomic seating for a truly relaxing experience.

Thermowood

Our wood-fired hot tubs feature elegant cladding made from naturally beautiful Thermowood planks.

What is Thermowood?

Thermowood is spruce wood that has been treated with heat, steam, and oils to increase its stability for outdoor use. Unlike untreated wood, Thermowood is much more resistant to warping and maintains its shape over time.

Durability & Insulation

Thermowood is extremely durable and long-lasting, thanks to its resistance to rot and fungal decay. It’s built to withstand all weather and climate conditions.

It also offers excellent thermal insulation, reducing heat loss by 20–25% compared to untreated softwood.

Wood Treatment

A surface treatment helps preserve Thermowood’s original rich colour for longer.

Thermowood can also be left untreated, as it is naturally weather-resistant. However, as with any untreated wood, it will gradually age to a silvery-grey patina over time.

Heater

Gardenvity’s wood-fired hot tubs are equipped with heaters made from certified, food-grade stainless steel, meeting our strict internal quality standards.

Trusted Materials Only

You can choose between V2A stainless steel (AISI 304) and V4A stainless steel (AISI 316).

For greater resistance to chlorine, we recommend V4A (AISI 316)

Efficient Heating

Gardenvity’s wood-burning heaters warm up your wood fired hot tub water in just 1 to 2 hours during summer, and in 3 to 4 hours during winter.

To heat cold water, you’ll typically need just 12–25 kg of firewood, making the process highly fuel-efficient and eco-friendly.

Maintenance and Care for Long-Lasting Use

To prolong the lifespan of your wood fired hot tub, regular maintenance is essential. This includes cleaning the tub, oiling and treating the wood, and checking all components to ensure they remain in good condition over time.

Using chlorine plays an important role in keeping the water clean and suitable for use, helping to limit bacteria buildup and extend how long the water can be used between changes. Proper water circulation also supports both the filtration and heating systems, contributing to smooth and reliable operation of your hot tub.

With consistent care and simple maintenance routines, your wood fired hot tub will remain comfortable, dependable, and enjoyable for years to come.

Insulated faux-leather cover

This cover not only speeds up the heating process of your wood fired hot tub (1–2 hours in summer, 3–4 hours in winter), but also plays a crucial role in retaining heat over longer periods—keeping your wood fired hot tub ready to use and energy-efficient all year round.

A key advantage of the bi-fold design is that it can be easily removed and replaced by just one person.

Essential Accessories for Your Wood Fired Hot Tub

Drink holders are a popular accessory that can be added to a wood fired hot tub. These convenient holders attach to the outside of the tub, keeping your favorite beverage within easy reach while you relax.

Alongside drink holders, a range of practical additions is available to make the hot tub experience even more comfortable and convenient. External shelves and headrests are among the most frequently selected options and are included in almost every order, as many owners consider them essential hot tub features. External shelves provide a practical surface for drinks and personal items, while headrests offer additional comfort and support during longer soaks.

Further accessories such as towel bars help keep towels close at hand, while a floating bar with integrated LED lighting adds both functionality and a pleasant visual accent. Practical elements like a corten steel wood rack allow firewood to be stored neatly nearby, an ash plate simplifies routine cleaning, and a chimney extension can be added to improve overall usability.

Together, these carefully selected accessories help create a more comfortable, organized, and enjoyable wood fired hot tub experience.

Wood-Fired Hot Tub Systems

  • Air Jets

  • Hydro Jets

  • LED Lighting

Air Jets

Gentle Massage

Air is released through the jets into the water, creating bubbles and swirling currents that deliver a soothing, full-body massage.

Choose Between 8 or more Air Jets

If you choose the 8-jet option, eight jets are placed around the backrest area, with some positioned at foot level.

Opting for more than 8 jets adds additional jets along the edge of the seating area, providing a gentle leg massage.

Both options are powered by a single 700 W compressor.

Easy to Use

Turn the air jet massage system on or off with a single button press – it’s that simple.

Hydro Jets

Targeted Water Streams

The hydro jet system in the wood fired hot tub releases pressurised water streams that help relax muscles and joints, ease tension, and promote full-body relaxation.

Choose Between 16 or 24 Hydro Jets

The position and number of hydro jets have been carefully selected with the human body's shape in mind to deliver the most effective massage experience.

Choosing 16 hydro jets (powered by a 1.1 kW pump) gives you up to three “therapeutic seats”, each equipped with four grouped jets designed to relieve tension along your back.

The 24-jet option (with a 2.2 kW pump) places the jets primarily at backrest level, offering focused relaxation.

LED Lighting

Multicolour Light Features

Create a magical atmosphere in your hot tub with our LED lighting system. Choose the dynamic colour-changing mode to impress your guests with a vibrant light show, or select a single, calming colour to match your mood.

Interior LEDs

Our lighting setup includes a central LED light and/or 8 or 10 mini LEDs around the inner edge (depending on the model), offering a stunning, customizable visual experience that enhances your relaxation and bathing enjoyment.

Exterior LEDs

With 10 mini LEDs placed around the base of the spa, the gentle glow of your wood fired hot tub extends into its surroundings, adding charm and ambiance to your outdoor space.

Water Quality & Comfort: Filtration, Heating, and Disinfection Solutions

  • Water Filtration

  • Permium Sand Filter

  • UV Lamp

  • 3kW Electric Heater

Water Filtration

Gardenvity’s premium wood-fired hot tubs come equipped with an advanced filtration system that keeps the water clean with minimal maintenance.

Eco-Friendly

Our filtration system uses 100% recyclable, non-toxic PET filter balls—a highly effective and environmentally friendly way to keep your hot tub water fresh and clear.
Depending on usage, the filter balls only need to be cleaned once a month and replaced every two years.

Efficient in More Ways Than One

The filter balls capture particles as small as 5 microns, ensuring excellent water clarity. They also reduce pressure in the sand filter pump, which leads to higher flow rates and helps extend the lifespan of the filtration system.

The Premium Sand Filter is designed to make water care simple, efficient, and reliable. Its advanced three-step filtration system keeps water clean for up to one or even two months with minimal chemical use by combining:

  • Sand filtration to capture debris and particles
  • UV-C disinfection to help reduce bacteria and impurities
  • Prefilter that improves efficiency and reduces maintenance

With independent controls and easy access to all components, the system is simple to operate and maintain, ensuring consistently clear water with minimal effort.

Built for year-round use, the Premium Sand Filter also includes:

  • 3 kW electric heater for reliable operation throughout the seasons
  • Square or round filter box options to suit different hot tub designs
  • Operation indicator light to clearly show when the system is running
  • Elevated legs and durable construction for long-term stability and performance

Together, these features create a dependable, energy-efficient solution that enhances comfort while reducing ongoing maintenance.

UV Lamp

Eco-Friendly Water Disinfection

This efficient and reliable disinfection method protects bathers from a wide range of germs, including viruses, fungi, and bacteria. By integrating a UV lamp into your hot tub’s filtration system, you create a clean, crystal-clear, and hygienic environment for safe and relaxing soaks.

Helps Reduce Chemical Use & Prevents Red Eyes

The UV lamp can reduce the need for water treatment chemicals by up to 80%. Its advanced UV-C technology effectively breaks down chloramines—compounds responsible for the unpleasant chlorine smell as well as potential causes of red eyes, skin irritation, and respiratory discomfort. It works in combination with all standard water treatment solutions to help keep the water clean for several months.

Long Lifespan – Up to 5 Years

With the recommended usage of 5 hours per day, the UV lamp can operate effectively for nearly 5 years or up to 9,000 hours.

3kW Electric Heater

The electric heater, connected to the water filtration line, helps maintain the water temperature after it’s been heated using the built-in wood-burning stove. This means you can enjoy a relaxing soak the next day with minimal effort. Simply heat with firewood, then preserve the warmth using the electric heater.

Effortless Winter Use

You can keep using your hot tub even in freezing temperatures without needing to drain the water. Thanks to the electric heater, there's no need to relight the fire every time—perfect for convenient winter relaxation.

Can my wooden hot tub be delivered anywhere in UK?

Our delivery service covers mainland UK.
Delivery to Scotland incurs additional costs.
If you live in a remote area or on an island, please contact us with your address and we will confirm whether delivery is possible.

What delivery options does Gardenvity offer?

a) Standard delivery to the kerbside (mainland UK) is included in the price.
b) We also offer an installation and assembly service, which brings the hot tub to its final location in your garden and includes set-up. Please note: crane work is not included.

If I choose kerbside delivery, what do I need to prepare?

There are three key things you should arrange in advance:

1. Ensure a delivery vehicle has access to your driveway.

2. Arrange 4–5 able-bodied adults, or a forklift, to move the hot tub to its intended position.

3. If access is restricted and the hot tub needs to be lifted over obstacles, you will need to hire a crane.

You can find more details in our dedicated blog post.

We cannot provide a fixed estimate, as costs vary depending on your location and the site conditions.

What is the typical delivery time?

Please note that customers are responsible for arranging a few additional people to assist with unloading and moving the hot tub parts.

This service does not cover crane costs if a crane is required.

If you select this option, we will ask for extra details about your site, such as photos or videos, exact measurements, and information about access. You must ensure good access to the site and remove any obstacles (such as gates or fence panels) that could block the way.

Key Points

Why choose a wood-fired hot tub instead of an electric one?

Heating with wood is far more economical than using electricity. Running costs are only a fraction of those for an electric heater.

A wood stove also heats the water much faster – typically 1–2 hours in summer and 3–4 hours in winter, compared with 12–24 hours for an electric heater.

Wood is a renewable energy source, making it the more eco-friendly option.

And finally, the fire itself is part of the pleasure – both aesthetic and therapeutic. Preparing and tending the stove becomes a calming ritual, while watching the flames gently burn away stress and tension.

Is there a maximum time I can spend in a wood-fired hot tub?

Limit each bathing session to 15–20 minutes and stay well hydrated to avoid overheating. Allow your body to cool down properly before getting back in. A second dip should usually be shorter than the first.

How long does it take to heat the water?

The recommended bathing temperature is 37–39 °C.
On average, water heats by around 8 °C per hour (for 2,000 litres). This means the water will reach 38 °C in about:

1–2 hours in summer

3–4 hours in winter

Heating times depend on the initial water temperature and the type of firewood used. Keeping the hot tub covered shortens the heating time.
👉 Read more about how to heat your hot tub efficiently.

Do wood-fired hot tubs bubble?

Yes – if fitted with a massage system. Air jets circulate the water, producing rising bubbles, while hydro jets give a deeper, more targeted massage effect.

How does water circulate through the stove? title

This works on basic physical principles:

Inside the tub, there are two openings connecting to the wood stove – one lower inlet and one upper outlet.

As the water heats, hot water rises and flows back into the tub through the upper outlet, while cooler water at the bottom is drawn into the stove through the lower inlet.

This natural circulation continues as long as the fire is burning, with no pump required.

What massage systems do Gardenvity hot tubs use?

Depending on the model, a hot tub may include 0, 8, 10, 12, 16 or 24 jets. The number of jets is always listed in the product specification. On configurable models, you can choose the option you prefer.

Hydro jets deliver targeted water streams to relieve muscle tension.

Air jets create a gentle, whole-body massage.

Thanks to the jet combinations, our wood-fired hot tubs can rival the hydrotherapy experience of electric spas.

What is the ideal water temperature?

We recommend keeping the water at around 39 °C all year round.
Higher temperatures can cause overheating, dehydration, or headaches.
Anyone with cardiovascular issues should avoid bathing at higher temperatures.

How can I control the water temperature?

We recommend using a reliable thermometer to monitor the water as it heats. Once it reaches around 39 °C, simply stop adding wood to the stove.

If the water gets too hot, you can top up with cold water using a garden hose or remove the lid to let the heat escape naturally.

Do wood-fired hot tubs require chemicals?

If the tub is emptied after 1–2 uses, no chemicals are needed – ideal for those who prefer a natural bathing experience.

If you wish to keep the same water for weeks or months, you’ll need a filtration system, UV light and chemicals to maintain water quality.

For holiday rentals or guest use, the water should be changed after each use.
